An unidentified 22-year-old man who shot himself in an apparent suicide attempt in Hermosa Beach yesterday is reported to be in critical condition today. Initial reports had originally indicated the gun shot was fatal.
Police officers responded to a family disturbance report at a residence near Pacific Coast Highway and 22nd Street, where the man was already gone. Police knew the man had left the area in a white Kia Forte, and spotted him around 4:30 p.m. near the 2300 block of Pacific Coast Highway.
The police officers pulled the car over, but before they could make contact the man shot himself with a .40-caliber pistol. The officer who witnessed the shooting attempted cardiopulmonary resuscitation before the paramedics arrived.
The original reports stated that the man died from the shooting; however, he was revived by paramedics and taken to a nearby hospital. The attempted suicide caused the southbound lanes on Pacific Coast Highway near Artesia Boulevard to shut down in the aftermath.
