Four people were rescued from the water after a small sailboat crashed into the Redondo Beach Pier around 7:00 p.m. on Thursday evening. Video footage showed the sailboat hitting the pilings and nearly overturning, and then breaking apart.
The Los Angeles County Fire Department's Lifeguard Division arrived shortly after the collision, where they found four people in the water. According to authorities, powerful winds and waves may have contributed to the incident. Conditions from witness video footage show choppy waters and strong winds by the pier.
The crash completely destroyed the boat, and authorities plan to recover pieces of the wreckage on Friday and throughout the weekend if necessary. The four survivors were treated for minor and moderate scrapes and bruises, and two were treated for mild hypothermia. The victims consisted of three men and one woman, ages 20 to 50. All four had life jackets on at the time of the crash.
