Man Dragged to Death During Carjacking

A Hawthorne man who died during an attempted carjacking has been identified as 47-year-old Luis Cuba. Cuba died after being taken to the hospital on Saturday night.

According to police, Cuba had parked his car in front of a convenience store in Lawndale at approximately 8:25 p.m. and left the engine running while he went inside the store. Once inside the business, several suspects got into Cuba’s car and began to drive away. Cuba attempted to grab the passenger door and was dragged several hundred yards before he fell off.

Authorities have asked anyone with information to contact homicide detectives. There are no current suspects, and police are unsure why Cuba left his car running while he went into the store.

Carjacking is a felony under California Penal Code Section 215 and can carry a prison sentence of up to nine years. That sentence can be even longer if a weapon is involved. Authorities have not disclosed whether the carjackers in this instance were armed.
