Bieber pleads 'no contest' to California egg-throwing

Justin Bieber has made the news a lot in the past year, from his Miami drag-racing Lamborghini incident -- where he resisted arrest, cursed at law officials and was found to have drug and alcohol in his system -- to throwing eggs at a neighbor’s house in California. The pop star is also facing charges in Canada for an assault on a limo driver.

So far, the young pop star has been charged only with misdemeanors, and his attorney has kept him out of any serious consequences -- other than forfeiting a good bit of money, which he seems to have plenty of. Bieber did not attend his hearing this past week for charges of vandalism in the egg-throwing incident. He allegedly threw a dozen or so eggs at a former neighbor’s house in Calabasas, California. He pleaded “no contest” to the charges. His sentencing included $80,900 in restitution, two years of probation, community service, and he also must attend anger management classes.

The incident occurred on Jan. 9. The only real evidence to the crime that law officials appeared to have was a surveillance video from the neighbor’s house, which doesn’t actually show Bieber, but has a recorded voice that is believed to belong to the young star. After the incident was reported, Bieber’s house was raided, and while no evidence pertaining to the egg-throwing incident was discovered, some paraphernalia and drugs were found. The pop star’s friend, who was at his residence, took ownership of those items and faced charges for them.

The former neighbors of Bieber showed receipts for $20,000 of damages to their property from the eggs. The house apparently had an expensive wood exterior. The couple will receive restitution for the damages.

Bieber had allegedly had a dispute with the neighbors, which according to a lieutenant of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, makes it a clear-cut case to him. However, no case without direct evidence is clear cut. In this case, the pop star and his attorney apparently felt it better to have this case settled and over with.

For many people facing criminal charges, having a criminal defense team to counter the evidence is paramount to helping them get on with their life. Also ensuring that evidence is legally obtained and that no one’s rights have been violated upon can sometimes have a huge impact on the results of a case.
